Spring brings the artists out. Now in its 21st year, the Forgotten Coast en Plein Air – America’s Great Paint-Out (201 Reid Avenue, Port St. Joe, Florida 32456) has become a highly anticipated event each March both for artists, those who love their work and even art collectors. Artists from across the country gather for this 10-day celebration which includes a series of free and ticketed events. The activities include workshops, exhibitions and artist demonstrations.
Events throughout the year bring a variety of opportunities for artists and art lovers to connect in this coastal setting. There’s the Mermaid Bay Festival (162 Miss Zola’s Drive, Port St. Joe, Florida 32456) in April, where art and the fanciful world of mermaids combine for a day of fun for families, music lovers and artisans. The Forgotten Music Festival (162 Miss Zola’s Drive, Port St. Joe, Florida 32456; 850-731-1058) is a two-day event in October where patrons enjoy an eclectic lineup of performers in a venue that overlooks St. Joseph Bay. In between, there is an array of events, activities and live music venues to enjoy.
From art shows to performance art, The Joe Center for the Arts (201 Reid Avenue, Port St. Joe, Florida 32456; 850- 229-8747) is a hub of activities all year long. It sponsors art shows and exhibits and offers classes and workshops for artists of all skill levels and ages. A slate of rotating exhibits, a members art market and pop-up exhibits take place throughout the year. The historic Port Theatre (314 Reid Avenue, Port St. Joe, Florida 32456), originally opened in 1938 and named to the National Historic Register in 2003, is coming back this year after extensive renovations. The line-up will include theatrical and musical performances, as well as community events.
Beginning in March each year, Reid Avenue merchants and restaurants celebrate First Friday Sip & Shop (Reid Avenue, Port St. Joe, Florida 32456; 850-227-1223). These evenings bring beverages, light hors d’oeuvres, art, music and special deals at many shops. Of course, after an early evening shopping spree, dinner and entertainment at one of the many outstanding local restaurants is a must.

They offer a unique shelling tour and creative art experience. Participants discover local shells along the pristine beaches and learn fascinating facts about them and the ecosystem in which they live. Walking and golf cart options are available for tours. After the excursion, guests are invited to turn their found treasures into custom art pieces during guided workshops, creating special keepsakes as memories of their Gulf County visit.

Oysters are an area specialty and a platter of fresh ones, whether raw, grilled or fried, is considered by many to be a work of art.
