From gold rush beginnings to modern-day celebrations, Villa Rica marks a historic year with rich heritage and year-round experiences
VILLA RICA, GEORGIA—APRIL 2026—Located off Interstate 20, just 35 minutes west of Atlanta, Villa Rica is preparing to celebrate its 200th anniversary of early settlement alongside America’s 250th anniversary. While many know it as the “City of Gold,” Villa Rica’s true wealth lies in its pure authenticity. From the 19th-century miners who discovered 98% pure gold in these hills to the 20th-century birth of Gospel music, this West Georgia destination invites visitors to explore a legacy that is as culturally rich as it was geologically blessed.
A legacy of gold and gospel
The story of Villa Rica begins in 1826 in a settlement originally known as “Hixtown.” This was a frontier territory defined by a “Wild West” spirit, where early structures like Wicks Tavern—the oldest commercial building in West Georgia—served as a gathering place for rugged prospectors and today serves as a living history museum. With 19 commercial gold mines operating in and around Villa Rica at its peak, prospectors continued to flock to the area but, by 1860, Villa Rica’s gold supplies had largely been exhausted. While Villa Rica’s gold rush was somewhat short lived, the community continues to celebrate its gold history and heritage in many ways. Today, the Pine Mountain Gold Museum showcases the area’s history and is Georgia’s only gold museum located on an actual mine. Additionally, the museum is on the National Register of Historic Places and offers visitors the opportunity to walk the trails where miners walked, explore the exhibits, take in the documentary film and get a hands-on experience panning for gold and gemstones onsite. Museum goers are also encouraged to take in views of the mining ruins by way of the Pine Mountain Scenic Railroad.
While the physical gold rush put the town on the map, a different kind of “gold” was discovered here at the turn of the century. Villa Rica is the birthplace of Thomas A. Dorsey, the “Father of Gospel Music.” Born in 1899, Dorsey’s influence transformed the American musical landscape by blending the soulful rhythms of the blues with traditional hymns. Visitors can pay homage to this cultural giant at the Thomas A. Dorsey Birthplace and Gospel Heritage Festival, (annually in June), and with a visit to his downtown mural (marker number 60 on the Georgia Mural Trail) that celebrates a man who proved Villa Rica’s most enduring exports were its stories and its songs.
Strike gold with community celebrations
Today, Villa Rica’s gold heritage continues to inspire community events and celebrations, particularly in the fall when the city’s Gold Rush Festival brings history to life. This event connects visitors to the spirit of the town—celebrating its origins while creating new traditions for generations to come. As the city commemorates its 200th anniversary alongside America’s 250th anniversary, this year offers an especially meaningful opportunity to experience all Villa Rica has to offer.
