Natural beauty, healthy practices and community spirit

BLUE RIDGE, GEORGIA–JULY 2023–We all know getting away can be good for the soul. Today, many of us are looking for an escape that is good for the mind and body, as well. Travel is not only a great means of getting away from the everyday but is also a chance for exploration and adventure and a welcome opportunity for rejuvenation. For all that, Blue Ridge, Georgia, is the perfect spot.

Here are some suggestions for finding your center in Blue Ridge.

Immerse yourself in nature

Just 90 minutes north of Atlanta off Interstate-575, Blue Ridge and its surrounding Fannin County offer a nearby respite that seems a world away. The first wave of calm comes from the amazing mountain views. Those who find their Zen in nature will find plenty of enlightenment here, amid 106,000 acres of Chattahoochee National Forest, 300 miles of hiking trails and 100 miles of trout streams.

Legendary routes like the Appalachian Trail and the Benton MacKaye Trail are included among the popular trails in the area, as are many day-long hikes. But there are also plenty of hikes of five miles or less for those who just want a short escape into the wilderness to recharge. The newly established Fightingtown Creek Nature Park (1126 Cedar Valley Road, Blue Ridge, Georgia 30513; 678-974-2609) includes 12 miles of mountain bike and hiking trails. The park is a 190-acre project that has been envisioned to further the community’s commitment to free public use trails and preservation of vital natural resources.

For those refreshed by water, there are five waterfalls in the area and waterways ranging from soothing brooks to swift-moving rivers. From casting a line to paddling with the currents to just relaxing on the bank, there are plenty of ways to enjoy some water therapy along the scenic Toccoa River and other area waterways.

One such spot is Long Creek Falls (Forest Service Road 58, Morganton, Georgia 30560). It is located on the Three Forks, where the Appalachian, Benton MacKaye and Duncan Ridge Trails meet. There is a two-mile, out-and-back hike along Long Creek to reach the falls. Another is the 270-foot-long Swinging Bridge over the Toccoa. The approach to the bridge is via a short hike on the Benton MacKaye Trail.

There are plenty of options for exploring all the beauty and adventure of Blue Ridge with a variety of day trips. Scenic driving tours, walking tours, hiking and biking trails and paddling routes all offer unique views and experiences.

Enjoy the local bounty

Within this beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains setting there are a host of businesses that foster balance and wellness and welcome visitors to the community. A longstanding example is the well-known Mercier Orchards (8660 Blue Ridge Drive, Blue Ridge, Georgia 30513; 706-632-3411). This fourth-generation, family-owned and -operated apple orchard was founded back in 1943. While it is the largest apple orchard in the Southeast, it is a hometown favorite business here and one of many that embody the deep community spirit that has been created by local entrepreneurs. In addition to apples, the Mercier farm grows berries, hosts U-Pick events and makes ciders, hard ciders, baked goods and more.

At The Folk Collaborative (2984 Mobile Road, McCaysville, Georgia 30555; 706-492-7753) baked goods are only the beginning. The bakery has freshly baked pies, breads and pastries along with homemade soups and more. In the adjacent apothecary, the shelves are filled with all-natural products made from locally grown and foraged ingredients using traditions and knowledge passed down through generations of Appalachians. A walk through the shop and bakery is like a step back in time, where visitors are surrounded by natural remedies, time-honored recipes and traditions and local hospitality. Outside, the apple orchard is the perfect spot for a picnic or a U-Pick adventure. They also offer classes on subjects ranging from herbal medicine making to fly tying.

Mountain Mama’s Coffee Lounge (477 West 1st Street Blue Ridge, Georgia 30513; 762-228-5325) is the perfect spot to chill out in the heart of downtown Blue Ridge. Locally roasted, organic, fair-trade coffees and herbal teas are served in a comfortable, creative setting. All of Mountain Mama’s syrups are homemade using whole ingredients and their own recipes. They also serve pastries and baked goods from the Folk Collaborative.

Enjoy the 100 percent natural and organic products of Honey on the Hill (577 East Main Street, Blue Ridge, Georgia 30513; 706-946-2019), where you’ll find sustainably sourced local honey as well as gourmet candies and beauty products. Blue Ridge Olive Oil Company (511 East Main Street, Suite 100, Blue Ridge Georgia 30513; 706-946-OILS) carries only the purest of olive oils available, along with vinegars and other specialty products. Their International Olive Oil and Vinegar Tasting Room offers an opportunity to taste olive oils and balsamic vinegars from around the world.

Find your inner peace

Aspiring artists–and all art lovers–can find inspiration within the 4 Elements Art Gallery (491 East Main Street, Blue Ridge, Georgia 30513; 706-258-2987) where exhibits of resident and featured artists are dedicated to each of the four universal elements. Whether your aim is pampering, cleansing or simple relaxation, a visit to Serenity in the Mountains Spa & Lodge (59 McKinney Road, Blue Ridge, Georgia 30513; 706-258-2244) is in order. Serenity is a full-service spa known for its wonderful service and impressive array of treatment options in a luxurious mountain cabin atmosphere. The quiet room affords guests a time of fireside repose to complete their spa experience.

There is also a boutique and juice bar onsite. Throughout the year, the event calendar includes retreats and additional events such as meditation sessions, SUP yoga classes and sound therapy. For full immersion, a retreat at Heartwood Health, Art & Yoga (711 Left Turn Road, Blue Ridge, Georgia 30513; 706-632-2824) is the answer. The retreat center specializes in yoga, nutrition and art retreats and holds events throughout the year.

Outdoor adventure, rustic relaxation, gold records and rocket ships

NORTH ALABAMA–JULY 2023–The diversity of North Alabama offers a host of options for a guys’ getaway that can be tailored for a variety of interests. The 16-county area is bounded by state lines on three sides and begins just an hour south of Nashville, at the Tennessee line. Interstate 65 runs through the center of the region, which stretches down past Cullman into Blount County.

There are options here for a not-so-typical guys’ trip. Whether it’s a focus on fishing, an exploration of Alabama’s music legacy or a combination of adventure and relaxation, there are more than a few options for curating the perfect getaway.

Outstanding fishing

It’s known for world-class fishing and the North Alabama spots on the Alabama Bass Trail are the best of the best. Lake Guntersville has been recognized as one of the top bass fishing lakes in the nation. This 70,000-acre lake is home to a variety of other species, too. While it stretches nearly 75 miles, it is the centerpiece of Lake Guntersville State Park (1155 Lodge Drive, Guntersville, Alabama 35976; 256-571-5440). In the park and beyond, free launch sites, private marinas and guide services can be found to meet any angler needs. Known as the “Crappie Capital of the World,” Weiss Lake draws anglers from near and far to test their skills in northeast Alabama. The 30,000-acre lake ranges from shallow flats to deep channels. To the west, Pickwick Lake is a favorite spot for those looking to land smallmouth bass. Nearby each of these productive and scenic lakes, fish camps, hunting lodges and campgrounds offer plenty of amenities.

Farm life

While there are many luxurious downtown and rustic rural lodging options here, there are also some unique opportunities to enjoy a weekend on the farm. At Sullivan Creek Ranch (151 County Road 1047, Vinemont, Alabama 35179; 256-595-4090) visitors can explore the 300-acre ranch, which specializes in raising Akaushi beef. At the Trading Post and Cattle and Canvas art studio, locally grown beef, original art and more are available for purchase.

Rattle Snake Saloon & Seven Springs Lodge (1292 Mt. Mills Road, Tuscumbia, Alabama 35674; 256-370-7220) is a place for exploring. Its 20,000 acres of natural woodland includes trails for hiking and horseback riding as well as regional historic sites and Native American shelters. There are campsites as well as a lodge and a highlight is a meal at the Rattle Snake Saloon, built into the shelf of a massive rock outcropping. Nearby, the Coon Dog Cemetery (Off Highway 247, Tuscumbia, Alabama 35674; 256-383-0783) is a favorite stop. More than 300 coon dogs have been laid to rest here, where personalized headstones and epitaphs pay tribute to man’s best friend.

Barbecue and Brews

North Alabama’s Craft Beer Trail and Barbecue Trail make a great combination for a flavorful tour of the region. Local brewers like Back Forty Beer Company (200 N 6th Street, Gadsden, Alabama 35901; 256-467-4912), Goat Island Brewing (1646 John H Cooper Drive, Cullman, Alabama 35055; 256-747-5556) and Seidr Brewing (14 1st Ave NW Arab, AL 35016) and more dot the map. Each offers local flavor as well as a bit of local culture, with brews such as Paw Paw’s Peach, Sipsey River Red, Sister Strawberry Mead and more. And for anyone who’s joined the debate about where the best barbecue can be found, North Alabama makes a strong case for its fare. Two of the best-known options have multiple locations across the region.

Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Q (1715 6th Avenue SE, Decatur, Alabama 35601; 256-350-6969) was founded here decades ago and is now widely recognized as one of the most prestigious barbecue restaurants in the world, having earned 15 World BBQ Championships. In addition to the delicious smoked meats, Big Bob’s is known for its Original BBQ White Sauce. LawLers Barbecue (1506 Highway 72 East Athens, Alabama 35611; 256-233-1818) is a local favorite in the region. The menu includes traditional smoked meats, of course, but the stuffed potatoes, slaw dogs and nachos top the list for many. Another local favorite is the flavor of the slow cooked pork, beef, chicken, ribs and turkey breasts, basted in special basting sauce at Whitt’s Barbecue (1397 East Elm Street, Athens, Alabama 35611; 256-232-7928 and 2532 Spring Avenue SW, Decatur, Alabama 35601; 256-350-2748). Their first restaurant was opened in 1966 and now the 4th generation is continuing the tradition of flavor at five locations.

Muscle Shoals Sound

Alabama’s musical legacy is epic and it has the hit records to prove it. North Alabama is home to world famous recording studios, which are open for tours. Muscle Shoals Sound Studios (3614 Jackson Highway, Sheffield, Alabama 35660; 256-978-5151) and Fame Recording Studios (603 E. Avalon Avenue, Muscle Shoals, Alabama 35661; 256-381-0801) are where musical legends came to record hits and work with the legendary local musicians known as the Swampers.

A tour of the Alabama Music Hall of Fame (617 Highway 72 W, Tuscumbia, Alabama 35674; 256-381-4417) immerses visitors in the state’s amazing musical landscape. Displays and interactive exhibits pay tribute to the many music legends that have called Alabama home.

Space exploration

Huntsville may be known as North Alabama’s largest city but its reputation goes beyond the bounds of earth! This city is known for its role in developing space travel. The U.S. Space & Rocket Center (1 Tranquility Base, Huntsville, Alabama 35805; 256-551-2230) draws visitors who love to “geek out” for a day, exploring one of the largest collections of rockets and space memorabilia on display anywhere in the world. The Smithsonian Affiliate is also the Visitor Center for NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center.

Outdoor adventure

If repelling, paddling, hiking or biking sound like the perfect getaway, North Alabama has it. Several outstanding state parks are located throughout the region. Whether taking on The Screaming Eagle Aerial Adventures zipline at Lake Guntersville, hitting the mountain bike paths of Monte Sano (5105 Nolen Avenue, Huntsville, Alabama 35801; 256-534-3757) or kayaking Little River at DeSoto State Park (1299 Blalock Drive NE, Fort Payne, Alabama 35967; 256-845-0051), there is an adventure sure to add memories to any guys’ getaway.

For motorcycle enthusiasts, there are several routes to be enjoyed, both scenic and challenging. Check out these top recommendations for North Alabama motorcycle rides, which include sections of the Natchez Trace, Bankhead National Forest and Lookout Mountain Parkway, just to name a few.

ALPINE HELEN-WHITE COUNTY, GEORGIA–JUNE 2022–Craving a getaway with the guys, girls, or your special gang? Head to Alpine Helen/White County, Georgia. About an hour and a half north of Atlanta, Appalachia meets Alpine in a lively North Georgia mountain town with fairytale Bavarian charm alongside the Chattahoochee River. Surrounding the entertaining town of Helen are protected forests and wilderness areas, state parks, waterfalls, scenic highways and trails. This destination combines the best of shopping, antiquing, dining and evening entertainment with outdoor adventure.

Because getaways for guys and gals are smashing the traditional stereotypes, this guide doesn’t divide up interests and activities by gender. Instead, following are ideas to ensure that every member of the group will have their perfect vacation. Included are accommodations suggestions based on interests and itinerary.

1. Dining and evening entertainment

Day and night, downtown Helen’s Bavarian architecture and cobblestone alleys exude a lively, fun vibe. Festive beer halls, sports pubs and dining stay open later in the evening and charming accommodations are just a walk away. More than three dozen casual and fine-casual restaurants, gastro-pubs, bakeries, ice creameries and snack shops serve everything from authentic German cuisine to classic Southern to American steakhouse and barbecue. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served on patios and decks all over town, many overlooking the river. HelenGAga.org/dining

2. Golf

For challenging golf with spectacular mountain views, Valhalla Resort and Golf Club is a premier North Georgia course along the Chattahoochee National Forest that’s open to the public. Frequent elevation changes, natural beauty and manicured Bermuda grass make it a challenge and a pleasure. Take a group lesson and check out the pro shop stocked with all the newest equipment and club fitting systems (664 Bahn Innsbruck Road, Helen, Georgia 30545; 800-642-2709). Just for fun, try out the three mini-golf courses in Helen and peruse a typical guys’ getaway on the Helen blog.

Upscale amenities include concierge, valet and full spa services and three dining options plus packages for hiking, fly fishing and winery tours (688 Bahn Innsbruck, Helen, Georgia 30545; 706-878-2200).

3. History and historic homes

Just seven minutes from Helen, in White County the gazebo-topped Sautee Nacoochee Indian Mound is likely the most-photographed landmark in the area. Across the road, tour the Italianate farmhouse and dairy barn and learn how life was lived in the 1870s through the 1920s at Hardman Farm State Historic Site (143 Highway 17, Sautee Nacoochee, Georgia 30571; 706-878-1077). A shaded and scenic one-mile ADA-accessible trail follows the Chattahoochee River from Hardman Farm to Helen with interpretive panels along the way.

The scenic community of Sautee-Nacoochee dates back to the 1800s, but its Native American roots go far deeper. Today, historic cabins have been exquisitely restored to house artist and artisan workshops and galleries, antiques, home furnishings and mercantile stores. In the old rural schoolhouse, the Sautee Nacoochee Cultural Center hosts juried events for regional artists. On the campus is the Folk Pottery Museum of Northeast Georgia, a history museum and African American Heritage Site (283 GA-255, Sautee Nacoochee, Georgia 30571; 706-878-3300 ext. 307). Established in 1876, the Nora Mill is a historic gristmill alongside the Chattahoochee River that stone-grinds corn and wheat, producing grits, corn meal, pancake and waffle mixes, flours, biscuit and bread mixes along with candy, honey and gifts.

Combine oenophilia or craft beer with a stay in a well-appointed guest room or cabin suites at Sylvan Valley Lodge and Cellars and enjoy the on-site tasting room (747 Duncan Bridge Road, Sautee, Georgia 30571; 706-865-7371). Lucille’s Mountain Top Inn & Spa is a romantic luxury inn and day spa with panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Sautee Valley and a menu of revitalizing therapeutic treatments (964 Rabun Road, Sautee, Georgia 30571; 706-878-5055).

4. Wine and beer

In historic Nacoochee Village Habersham Winery is one of Georgia’s oldest and largest wineries and its gift shop is an oenophile’s dream (7025 South Main Street, Helen, Georgia 30545; 706-878-9463). Yonah Mountain Vineyards sits at the foothills of Yonah Mountain and offers plenty of outdoor seating, a beautiful hand-crafted wine bar and sweeping views of the mountains (1717 Hwy 255 South, Cleveland, Georgia 30528; 706-878-5522). Also with magnificent views of Yonah Mountain are The Cottage Vineyard & Winery (5050 Highway 129 North, Cleveland, Georgia 30528; 706-865-0053), offering 15 wines, including dry whites and reds as well as multiple sweet wines, and CeNita Vineyards, Winery and Tasting Room, where guests can play a game of corn-hole, recline in hammocks or chat with staff in the tasting room (591 Dock Dorsey Road, Cleveland, Georgia 30528; 706-865-7478). Check the websites for special events and group reservations. To sample even more of Georgia’s wines, visit the in-town tasting room of Sweet Acre Farms Winery, specializing in fruit-based “country wines,” wine slushies and beer on tap (8016 South Main Street, Suite B-1, Helen, Georgia 30545; 706-969-7111). Visit the winery websites for listings and details on making reservations and other key information before you go. Several transportation services offer a fun, safe and informative experience.

Helen is an unrivaled beer-lovers’ destination, with German and international brews featured at many restaurants along with craft selections from the Southeast.

5. Waterfalls

The twin waterfalls known as Anna Ruby Falls adjacent to Unicoi State Park are the most popular, but there are plenty more to be discovered. Find them all on the Alpine Helen-White County website’s waterfall guide

6. Outdoor adventure

Serious and amateur outdoor lovers rave about the hiking, mountain biking, rafting, tubing, fly fishing, zip lining and more to be found just minutes away from Helen in “Georgia’s Official Outdoor Adventure Destination.” The Appalachian Trail intersects GA75 and SR348, with parking facilities at both locations. Yonah Mountain is one of the top three rock climbing spots in Georgia.

For on-site access to outdoor adventure, visit or stay at Unicoi State Park and Lodge, situated on 1,063 acres adjacent to the Chattahoochee National Forest. Within Unicoi, Adventure Lodges of Georgia manages the accommodations and offers nearly every outdoor activity possible, from an ADA-accessible interpretive trail and guided nature hikes to heart-pounding ziplining and Olympic-level mountain biking.
