River adventures, botanical gardens and historic plantations in Natchitoches, Louisiana
NATCHITOCHES, LOUISIANA–OCTOBER 2021–In north central Louisiana, the city of Natchitoches has many options for enjoying the outdoors. From its home along the banks of the Cane River Lake, the oldest city in Louisiana has a history of welcoming visitors. Today, many are captivated by its variety of landscapes and the multitude of ways to enjoy them. Getting to Natchitoches is easy, from Shreveport to the north on I-20 and from Lafayette to the south via I-10, both connecting to Interstate 49. Natchez, Mississippi, to the east and Lufkin, Texas, to the west are both less than a three hour’s drive.
Enjoying the outdoors is for everyone here. While adventure seekers can get their fill, there are a host of relaxing ways to get outside and take in all this bustling riverfront community has to offer. Downtown is the perfect place to start and Cane River Carriage Company (102 Beauport Street, Natchitoches, Louisiana 71457; 601-807-9086) offers a great way to tour this beautiful historic district. While a carriage ride is ideal for the street views, the Cane River Queen River Boat (103 Beauport Street, Natchitoches, Louisiana 71457; 318-663-7787) offers a leisurely cruise along Cane River Lake. Each tour is hosted by locals who share the history and legends of the region.
The more adventurous may want to explore the Cane on their own. For that, Cane River Paddle & Pedal Sports (Downtown Riverbank Beauport Station, Natchitoches, Louisiana 71457; 318-527-0066) offers kayaks, stand up paddle boards, hydro bikes and more for rent.
Nearby Fort St. Jean Baptiste State Historic Site (155 Jefferson Street, Natchitoches, Louisiana 71457; 318-357-3101) offers an understanding and appreciation of the customs and cultures of the early inhabitants of Natchitoches from its founding in 1714 throughout its storied history. The grounds of the reconstructed fort bring the early days to life and the museum displays add to the experience.
Just a short drive outside of town, Briarwood Nature Preserve (216 Caroline Dorman Road, Saline, Louisiana 71070; 318-576-3379) is considered the most complete botanical and wildlife sanctuary in Louisiana. This is the birthplace and home of Caroline Dormon, a world-renowned naturalist, author and artist and the first woman to be hired in the United States Forest Service. There are forest trails, bog habitats and more, each filled with native plants. Briarwood is open seasonally on weekends and weekday tours are available by appointment.
The Cane River Creole National Historical Park (4386 Highway 494, Natchitoches, Louisiana 71456; 318-352-0383, ext. 316) is a national treasure comprised of Oakland Plantation, considered the most complete Creole plantation in the country, and the outbuildings at Magnolia Plantation, housing the oldest wood screw cotton press in its original location in the United States. Buildings, equipment and personal items are on display and offer the opportunity to walk the grounds while learning of the early agricultural customs and economic conditions here.
Melrose Plantation (3499 LA-119, Melrose, Louisiana 71452; 318-379-0055) is another extensive property. At this Creole plantation, visitors learn of the lives of the families who lived and worked here and of the field hand who become a renowned folk artist.
For a different look back in time, many families enjoy a visit to Dark Woods Adventure Park (4343 University Parkway, Natchitoches, Louisiana 71457; 318-228-1725). This is home of Dark Woods Mining Company, a year-round attraction for the young and young at heart. Panning for gems has never been more fun as treasure hunters explore along the rustic, 100-foot wooden running water mining sluice. This low-tech, outdoor family attraction is joined in fall by Dark Woods Haunted Attractions, followed by Christmas in the Park each year.
