A rare urban adventure where rafting, dining, culture, and riverfront recreation flow together
COLUMBUS, GEORGIA–MARCH 2026—In most places, a whitewater rafting trip means heading deep into the mountains and staying miles from town. In Columbus, Georgia–just 90 minutes from Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport–the rapids run straight through Uptown, Columbus’ vibrant downtown area.
Here, visitors can spend the morning navigating world-class rapids on the Chattahoochee River and, minutes later, be enjoying chef-driven dining, boutique hotels, live music or a Broadway touring performance in the heart of Columbus.
Anchoring the experience is the RushSouth Whitewater Park, operated by Whitewater Express. Stretching 2.5 miles through downtown Columbus, it is the longest urban whitewater rafting course in the world, offering guided rafting trips, kayaking and ziplining with the city skyline as a backdrop.
As rafters navigate the Chattahoochee River rapids, they travel along the natural border between Georgia and Alabama, creating a unique experience where visitors paddle between two states while moving through the heart of the city.
“Columbus offers something truly unique for travelers,” said Ashley Woitena, president and CEO of VisitColumbusGA. “You can experience the thrill of whitewater rafting and then walk straight into our downtown area to enjoy great restaurants, arts and culture and inviting places to stay. It’s an outdoor adventure destination that also delivers the full city experience.”
Few destinations in the United States offer this combination of world-class whitewater and walkable urban amenities. In Columbus, outdoor adventure sits just steps from restaurants, hotels, cultural attractions and entertainment venues, creating a rare opportunity for travelers to experience both adrenaline and city life in a single trip.
A Global whitewater destination
Columbus’ innovative approach to river recreation has earned international recognition. The International Canoe Federation (ICF) recently named Columbus the first-ever Center of Excellence in the world for whitewater sport development, recognizing the city’s unique ability to support training, recreation and international competition in an urban setting.
The Chattahoochee Whitewater Park has already hosted multiple national and world championship events, drawing elite paddlers and spectators from around the globe.
That track record helped position Columbus to win one of the sport’s most competitive international bids. The city was selected over Paris, France, to host the 2028 ICF Canoe Freestyle World Championships, bringing the world’s top freestyle athletes and international spectators to the Chattahoochee River.
Looking ahead, additional river enhancements—including a proposed surf wave feature designed for freestyle kayaking and river surfing—are expected to expand both recreational opportunities and international competition potential along the Chattahoochee.
Adventure tailored for every traveler
Guided rafting trips through the Chattahoochee Whitewater Park are designed for a wide range of visitors. Trips operate in both high-flow and low-flow conditions, allowing the experience to be tailored from thrilling rapids for adventure seekers to more moderate outings ideal for families or first-time rafters.
Thanks to controlled water releases upstream, the river’s flow shifts throughout the day, giving visitors the opportunity to choose between more relaxed morning trips and higher-volume rapids later in the day.
All trips are led by experienced guides from Whitewater Express, who provide equipment, safety instruction and local expertise. Guests check in at the downtown Whitewater Express outpost where everything needed for the adventure—from gear to transportation along the course—is provided.
The experience has become a favorite for team-building retreats, meeting or conference activity, bachelor and bachelorette trips, family vacations, couples’ getaways and groups of friends looking for a memorable outdoor adventure.
Even those who prefer to stay dry can enjoy the action. Waveshaper Island, located along the Chattahoochee RiverWalk, offers one of the best vantage points to watch rafters navigate the rapids while enjoying the scenic riverfront setting.
Adventure beyond the rapids
Visitors can add even more excitement with Blue Heron Adventure Park, an interstate zipline adventure, a unique experience that sends participants soaring across the Chattahoochee River between Georgia and Alabama. The multi-stage course includes several zipline crossings along with platforms that feature fun activities and challenges before returning across the river.
Beyond the river itself, Columbus offers miles of trails and riverfront experiences that connect visitors to the city’s broader attractions. The Chattahoochee RiverWalk, stretching more than 15 miles, winds along the water and connects parks, museums, historic districts and downtown gathering spaces.
For generations, the Chattahoochee River powered the mills and industries that helped build Columbus. Today, that same river has been reimagined as the city’s signature outdoor attraction, transforming a historic waterway into one of the most dynamic urban adventure destinations in the country.
After a day on the river, visitors can explore Columbus’ growing dining scene, enjoy performances at RiverCenter for the Performing Arts or the Springer Opera House—the State Theatre of Georgia—or relax along the riverfront as the sun sets over the Chattahoochee.

With its combination of world-class outdoor recreation, walkable riverfront districts, vibrant dining scene and cultural attractions, Columbus offers travelers an experience that is difficult to find anywhere else in the country.
