Autumn traditions commemorate 200 years and holiday cheer fill up the winter months in this North Georgia city, a stone’s throw from Atlanta
VILLA RICA, GEORGIA—SEPTEMBER 2026—Fall celebrations begin on September 26, 2026, when Villa Rica honors its 200-year-old gold rush heritage at the annual Gold Rush Festival. But being the state’s first discovery of gold in 1826—and Georgia’s shiny metal one of the world’s purest—is just one of the many ways to relish this time of year when Villa Rica trees show off their own shades of gold, as well as a palette of other autumnal colors. The fun happens all the way until New Year’s!
Gold Rush Festival
It’s not well known that Georgia contains a beautiful vein of gold, one of the world’s purest, at 98 percent pure from the ground. Gold was struck atop a hill near the present-day Pine Mountain Gold Museum in an area called Pine Town, starting the gold rush to Georgia that included other North Georgia towns. Ultimately, Pine Town, along with Hixtown and Cheevestown, combined to form a city called “Villa Rica,” which translated by most means “City of Gold,” although the literal translation is Portuguese for “City of Riches.”
It’s only natural that Villa Rica celebrates its rich inception with a festival every year! The Gold Rush Festival on September 26, 2026, assembles live music, arts and crafts vendors, food, family friendly activities and more throughout the day in historic downtown Villa Rica.
Learn & Pan
Visitors may learn more about the town’s history—gold and otherwise—at the Pine Mountain Gold Museum and Scenic Railroad. The museum exhibits unique minerals found in the region as well as from around the world, including 10,000-year-old mammoth ivory and Trinitite, a mineral glass formed during the 1945 Trinity atomic test. There’s also 30 acres of forest to explore with two miles of walking trails.
If you want to bring home Villa Rica gold, try your hand at panning. For a nominal fee, visitors will dip pans into water filled with riches to capture gems and gold, all yours to keep.
Holiday Train Rides
Visitors may enjoy the historic C.P. Huntington Engine #310 at the Pine Mountain Gold Museum and Scenic Railroad, enjoying a mile-long train ride through the base of Pine Mountain and past the ruins of the old mining station, Georgia’s only active gold mine at a gold museum. Starting on October 1, 2026, the Pine Mountain Scenic Train Ride becomes the “Nightmare Express,” a ghost train for those who dare. In late November, the train morphs into a holiday ride.
Downtown Charm
Visitors will love Villa Rica’s historic downtown any time of the year, from the locally owned boutiques to the award-winning restaurants. During the fall and winter months, several special events give visitors more reason to head downtown.
The Hispanic Heritage Festival on October 10, 2026, celebrates the vibrant cultures, traditions and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities with music, dance, food, and vendors. Thrill at the Mill is a safe family-friendly Halloween event on October 24, 2026, where local businesses set up decorated booths to pass out candy.
The Golden City Car Cruisers Monthly Cruise-In happens every third Saturday, March through October, showcasing classic cars and delivering live music, door prizes and more.
Christmas on Main begins at noon December 5, 2026, followed by a New Year’s celebration beginning at 4 p.m. December 31, 2026.
