Cabin stays, holiday celebrations and winter nights in the North Georgia mountains
BLUE RIDGE, GEORGIA – OCTOBER 2026 – Mornings overlooking the mountains, afternoons spent shopping downtown and evenings by the fire. In Blue Ridge, Georgia, the holidays come with room to settle in and enjoy the season.
About 90 miles north of Atlanta, Blue Ridge offers a mountain escape with private cabins and a downtown filled with holiday activity. Take a ride on the Holiday Express, find gifts from local artists or gather for the lighting of the Great Tree. Back at the cabin, a clear December night might bring a view of the Geminid meteor shower and the Milky Way.
Named one of Southern Living’s ‘South’s Best Mountain Towns’ in 2022, Blue Ridge is worth settling into for a long weekend or an extended holiday stay.
Find your mountain retreat
A mountain cabin makes it easy to enjoy Blue Ridge at your own pace. These rentals offer space to gather over a holiday meal and settle in for a few days:
- Elevated Escape, available through Southern Comfort Cabin Rentals, sleeps eight across four bedrooms. Located in Cherry Log, the cabin has mountain views, an outdoor fireplace, a hot tub and a fire pit.
- Mountain Solace, offered by Escape to Blue Ridge, is less than four miles from downtown. The three-bedroom cabin sleeps up to nine and features porch swings overlooking the mountains, a hot tub and an outdoor fireplace.

Start Thanksgiving with a Turkey Trot
The annual Blue Ridge Turkey Trot 5K takes place on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 2026. The downtown race and walk starts at 8 a.m.
Celebrate the Season Downtown
Thanksgiving weekend brings the holiday season to downtown Blue Ridge. On November 27, 2026, Blue Friday features shopping specials, entertainment and food vendors. The Gingerbread Village opens at noon at the Blue Ridge Mountains Arts Association’s Arts Center.
The celebration continues on November 28 with Light Up Blue Ridge & Christmas Parade. Visitors can enjoy downtown entertainment, watch the parade and gather for the lighting of the Great Tree.
Ride the holiday express
The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway’s Holiday Express offers a one-hour ride with holiday music, a reading of The Night Before Christmas and a visit from Santa. Hot chocolate and other snacks are available for purchase in the concession car.
Rides are offered on select dates from November 27 through December 24, 2026. Advance booking is recommended.
Shop for gifts
Downtown Blue Ridge’s boutiques, specialty shops and galleries offer plenty to browse. The Blue Ridge Mountains Arts Association’s Holiday Market runs from November 15 through December 19, 2026, with artwork and handcrafted pieces by member artists.
A short drive north, McCaysville has more shops and restaurants along the river. Find more ideas in the destination’s shopping guide.
Bring something back for the cabin
Stop by Mercier Orchards to browse the market for local foods and treats. Pick up apple cider doughnuts or fried pies from the bakery and explore the orchard’s selection of wines and hard ciders.
See a holiday performance
The Blue Ridge Community Theater presents The Best Christmas Pageant Ever: The Musical from November 27 through December 20, 2026. The production follows the Herdman children as they take part in their town’s annual Christmas pageant.
Look up for a holiday light show
The holiday lights don’t end downtown. More than 40% of Fannin County is national forest land, and away from the lights of town, the surrounding mountains offer darker places to take in the night sky. Bundle up, bring a blanket and look for stars from your cabin or another spot with an open view.
December’s long nights bring plenty to see. On a clear evening, look for Orion and the Pleiades, also known as the Seven Sisters. Under Blue Ridge’s dark skies, the Andromeda Galaxy can appear as a faint smudge to the naked eye or through binoculars.
The Geminid meteor shower is expected to peak on the night of December 13 – 14. One of the year’s most reliable meteor showers, the Geminids will have favorable viewing conditions in 2026, with the crescent moon setting early. Weather permitting, find a dark spot and give your eyes time to adjust.
