Artists and community thrive together
One artist whose work can be viewed locally and beyond, is Ann Litrel (807 Bermuda Run, Woodstock, Georgia 30189; 678-640-8217). She is known for paintings that bring the spirit of Georgia’s wild landscapes and natural wonders, from the peaks of the Blue Ridge Mountains to the shores of the barrier islands, to life. She and her husband moved to Woodstock decades ago and she sees the arts as an integral part of the fabric of the community.
“I believe in this deeply,” Ann says, “that the presence of the arts and artists in a community exercises just an indescribable influence on the quality of living, and people can perceive it. They may not be able to put their finger on why it’s special, but I think it raises the spirit. I think it imparts a kind of vitality people can feel. There’s a newness.”
Artist Chase King grew up here and credits early mentors and a supportive community as contributors to his success, beginning in his high school years. “This was the time where I began to formulate my voice and vision as an artist. Growing up in Woodstock, I spent a great deal of my time in the forest and lake, drawing inspiration from the beauty and history of the area. There are so many people who had a hand in my journey in those years. Having that kind of support early on installed just enough crazy in me to keep on with the pursuit.”
He has seen that community support for the arts expand over time. “With the downtown area expanding during the early 2010s, our art community was grassroots and close-knit. Fast forward to present day, we now have an established visual arts center that hosts a number of educational workshops, classes and expertly curated shows that exposes our community to a host of all types of art and culture.”
“My art journey has taken me well beyond the city limits of Woodstock,” Chase notes. “However, I remain involved because I want a stake in ensuring this community fosters and supports the current and future generations.”
