COLUMBUS, GEORGIA—FEBRUARY 12, 2019: There are millions of geocaches worldwide and Columbus, GA has the distinction of being the first location on the planet to create and maintain a GeoTour. The Columbus RiverWalk GeoTour was developed in 2012. It consists of 32 caches hidden along this linear park. Since its inception, there have been more than 1,400 geocachers on the trail, with logs totaling more than 9,200. With this amount of visitation, the staff at VisitColumbusGA is tasked with making sure the GeoTour is maintained and up-to-date.
Geocaching is an outdoor recreational activity where participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or mobile device and other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers, called “geocaches” or “caches,” at specific locations marked by coordinates all over the world.
There are six unique geocache series in the RiverWalk GeoTour. Completing each of the series qualifies you to win a limited edition RiverWalk GeoTour playing card. Cards include the RiverWalk, Dams, Attractions, Mills, Chattahoochee River, and Whitewater. There are 5 to 6 caches in each of the series and participants are allowed to collect one or all six cards. In addition, complete a specific number of caches to earn up to three custom geo-coins.
