America’s first gold rush happened here and today the town offers a historic, authentic experience
VILLA RICA—JULY 2026—Only a short drive from Atlanta lies Georgia’s City of Gold. The country’s first gold rush happened in the Peach State with the first discovery in Villa Rica around 1826. And boy was that gold shiny! Villa Rica gold is among the purest in the world, at 98 percent pure from the ground, which is how the town got its name. Most people translate Villa Rica as the “City of Gold,” and that would be correct, but the literal translation is Portuguese for “City of Riches.”
History
The gold mines are long gone but Villa Rica remains a gem of the northwestern Atlanta metropolitan area. Visitors will find the historic escape from the urban noise of Atlanta refreshing and authentic, with a vibrant historic downtown, outstanding culinary scene and plenty of ways to enjoy Georgia’s rolling hills. And yes, visitors can still search for gold.
Authentic
The town’s original name was Pine Mountain and the Pine Mountain Gold Museum and Scenic Railroad honors both the town’s varied history but mostly the reason settlement happened here: gold! Visitors will learn all about Georgia’s unique geology which caused the formation of a long vein of pure gold through its mountains, explore a new archaeology display highlighting the museum’s ongoing fieldwork and a gorgeous Georgia mineral showcase with specimens from across the state, including 10,000-year-old mammoth ivory and Trinitite, a mineral glass formed during the 1945 Trinity atomic test. Visitors may pan for gold, hike through the 30 acres of woods surrounding the main buildings—great for picnicking—or ride the Pine Mountain Scenic Railroad.

The physical gold rush put the town on the map, but so did the music of Thomas A. Dorsey. Known as the “Father of Gospel Music,” Dorsey’s influence transformed the American musical landscape by blending the soulful rhythms of the blues with traditional hymns. Dorsey wrote the beautiful “Take My Hand, Precious Lord” and “Peace in the Valley,” among many other awe-inspiring gospel songs. Visitors can pay homage to this cultural giant at the Thomas A. Dorsey Birthplace and Gospel Heritage Festival that’s held annually in June and with a visit to his downtown mural (marker number 60 on the Georgia Mural Trail) or his historical market on U.S. Hwy. 78 that commemorates his birthplace.
Accessible
It’s a short drive from Atlanta on Interstate 20 to downtown Villa Rica. The charming streets are lined with historic buildings, murals, locally owned boutiques and antique shops, and a variety of culinary experiences that range from Memphis barbecue at Collins Family Food and BBQ to the Louisiana flavors of Gabe’s Downtown. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch a train riding through or be present for one of the town’s many festivals celebrating its heritage. The area also serves as a hub for live entertainment, including concerts and festivals at The MILL Amphitheater.
Adventurous
Villa Rica is an outdoors lover’s paradise with parks, sports pavilions, hiking trails, fishing lakes and multiple golf courses making it ideal for both day trips and a weekend away.
